I am happy that camp is going well. Too bad your first preseson game is longer being held in Des Moines. We were looking forward to having you and the rest of the team in our city for a night this Saturday. I had hoped to use the game as a major jumping off point to further expand lacrosse in the community and state.
Tonight was originally going to be a press night at our box lacrosse league to build excitement for Saturday's game. Instead it will be a night of refunding tickets for the canceled event. Rather than having the excitement of a full day of indoor/box lax this Saturday, we now have an empty Wells Fargo Arena. Gone is our chance for major lax exposure; looks like it is back to my grassroots efforts...
While I know that you are not at all responsible for the cancelation of the game originally scheduled for this Saturday, I wanted to share our collective disappointment. Lacrosse has really only been in the Des Moines metro for a little more than a year and has grown substantially since I began working on increasing its presence last October. Having the Swarm in town - thrusting professional lacrosse upon the community - would have legitimized the sport in the eyes of many.
Perhaps the most disappointing to me, on a personal level, are the missed opportunities to meet and network with the players. As I worked with the Wells Fargo Arena and Swarm staff to showcase the local programs in conjunction with marketing the games, your name was brought up by them several times. The other area coaches and I were excited at the possibility of speaking with you about the game. Our players were looking forward to the clinic that was scheduled prior to the game.
Unfortunately the game was canceled for reasons that have not been made entirely clear. Now our boys are missing out on a professional lax clinic. Our community is missing out on its first professional lacrosse game. Most importantly, the NLL is missing out on tapping a new market and expanding its fanbase.
Despite my bitterness at the loss of this weekend's game, Good luck to you and the team this season. I plan to make time to get up at to Minnesota at least once this season.
